GB Tubulars Running Procedures

GB Tubulars has designed Running Procedures for all GB Connections. GB Connections employ GB Butt and GB 3P Threadforms which are refined and modified API BTC Threads respectively. It should be noted that API does not specify makeup torques for API BTC Connections.

Like API, GBT recognizes there are numerous variables that can affect field makeup torque values of Buttress-type threadforms. Some of these variables include, but are not limited to vertical alignment; rig movement (if any); amount, distribution and type of thread compound; experience of casing crew; temperature; type of equipment including number of grip points and calibration; location and orientation of snub line; etc. So, like API, GB Tubulars does not specify minimum, optimum and maximum makeup torque values for field makeup.

Instead, GBT has developed a Running Procedure designed to establish the proper field makeup torque with the actual rig, equipment and personnel and under the conditions that exist at the time of the casing run. This procedure accounts for all of the variables that exist at the time of the run and has proven effective for uniform connection assembly and therefore consistent connection performance throughout the string.

GBT strongly recommends that the procedure be followed closely to determine the proper running torque at the beginning of each casing run. A recommended Minimum Make up Torque referred to in the Running Procedure is specified on the Data Sheet.

An additional comment is necessary regarding connections assembled with Threadlocking Compounds. Due to the wide variability of various threadlocking compounds, GBT cannot provide generalized makeup torque guidance. However, we do recommend the following.

  1. Parts should be cleaned and pre-aligned for quick, clean stabbing prior to mixing the threadlocking compound.
  2. The threadlocking compound should be kept at room temperature (warmed if necessary in cold weather) prior to mixing. Mixing should be in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions.
  3. Immediately after mixing, the threadlocking compound should be applied to the perfect thread area of the pin member only. It should be applied evenly over all perfect threads so that there are no bare spots. It is NOT necessary to apply threadlocking compound to imperfect pin threads or coupling threads.
  4. After application the pin should be stabbed and immediately made up to pin nose or shoulder engagement.

The entire process should be completed within 5 minutes after the threadlocking compound is mixed. It is our experience that a well planned and set up threadlocking procedure results in more successful connection makeups at higher, but not excessive torques.
